You know what? You be yourself. Whatever you may endure now by those nasty people who treat you as outcasts will all turn around in the end. YOU will be the one who owns the company that the big tough running back sweeps out at night at the end of the day! And remember that snotty cheerleader who is so hateful to you now? She'll probably be the one kissing your bum and fetching you coffee later on in life.
Be yourself and learn to accept and love you. In high school, everyone is insecure...EVEN the cool kids. That's why they're such jerks sometimes to the smart kids. Life will all work out the way it's supposed to in the end. It always does. ;)

It is a power issue. There is a quote from Buffy that I love (have it hanging in my cubicle at work...lol):
"I've had a lot of people talking at me the last few days. Everyone just lining up to tell me how unimportant I am and I've finally figured out why. Power. I have it. They don't. This bothers them."
I find that the harder people work to put you down, the more they are showing the power you have over them.
There is also the matter that most of us who have earned the name "nerd" or "geek" often have low self-image which makes us even bigger targets.
It's a bit lonely on the moral high ground, but the view is much nicer! I am now in my 30's and I promise, that if you can find the strength in yourself, you can be the biggest nerd in the world and life can be terrific!

A lot of nerds (not all, but a lot) have a hard time interacting socially and it's hard to be around someone like that. It's almost painful sometimes to watch them make a fool of themselves or simply sit there and do/say nothing. I don't "cast out" nerds, but some are hard to hang out with. I married a nerd! Some are fun and "normal".

I was and am a nerd. I am proud of this, if they made a sticker that said proud nerd I would display it with pride. I'm 30 now and don't really care what people think of me as long as my family and I are happy that is all that matters... I think we were outcasts because, at least for me, all the silly high school stuff didn't matter. And all the all the things that mattered to me were not cool things. That's okay, someday you will find that you don't care what other people think.

for the same reason anyone gets cast out. either they are feared by the majority or they are different. insecurity is an element too. if someone were to hang out with a "nerdy" kid then that would cast them out as well. little do they know the value of getting beyond the surface. i don't know where you live, but where i'm at it is fashionable to be nerdy! (but then again i am not a teenager). if you are a teenager, don't let anyone push you around or take advantage of you. if you are able to stand up for yourself in an elequent and graceful way, they will ultimately have to deal with thier own judgements (how embarassing). take the time to really know yourself. not many people can knock down someone who is confident in who they are. i know it isn't emotionally easy dealing with not being accepted by others, but if you are able to use this as a gift of learning, just know it can give you insight to a vast majority of people. there is a lot of people out there that think emotional sensitivity is sexy.

"Nerds" are cast out for a few reasons
1) nerds tend to be smart
2) their classmates tend to not be as smart
3) Nerds also tend to have poor social skills/be shy
4) People find smart people intimidating
5) people also find people with poor social skills intimidating (take my sister as an example. She wouldn't hurt a fly, but she's scarcastic, and tiny and has few close friends. Most boys avoid her like the plague, as though she will castrate them with her teeth).
6) People reject those who they find intimidating

Just wait until you are an adult. Nerds end up being the most successful (believe me - I know since I was a nerd in high school). So we end up getting the last laugh because we have great jobs and great cars and great houses, etc.

What makes you say that? Nerds run the world. Those who aren't nerds become Communications and Arts majors in college.
