On hondas made before obd came out inn 1996 they used flash codes to give check engine light codes. On some 91 and older civics and crx's theres an led on the computer under the passengers seat that blinks the codes.
Hondas without the led use the dash lights to blink the codes. Under the glove compartment area there should be a little blue connector with two pins and two wires coming out of it. Jump the pins with a paper clip or a peice of wire (honda techs use special dealer tool hmc-288838, a matching conector with a wire loop). Anyhow with the jumper in place and the key on the dash light should blink. codes are read as either 2 or 3 digit numbers depending on the system. 2 digit codes will read long flash * long flash * pause * short flash short flash short flash repeated would be a code 23 in the system. 3 digit codes would be read as flash*flash*flash*flash*flash* pause flash*flash* pause flash*flash*flash*flash*flash*flash* would be a code 5-2-6. you get the idea.
Service manuals will tell you what the flash codes mean. You use flowcharts to diagnose from there. or you can throw some parts at it. For the record i wouldnt trust most autozone employees ive met to change plug wires on my 2.2 subaru.

Here's the easy way to diagnose the problem. Go to your local auto zone, advance, O' Reilly, etc. They will have a code reader there that they will just hook up to the vehicle and it will read the codes for you, for FREE. They also will have a list of what each code means, and give you a printout of the bad sensors or parts involved, and even give you a list of what the parts will cost... all for nothing. (Of course the parts aren't free LOL)
Hope this helped.

most cars come with a instruction manual that contains all the codes. If not there is codes in the trunk of your car, literally on the trunk (on the inside). if all else fails, look up the 1800 online and ask the company. or, call the person you bought it from, hopefully a car dealership. They should know.
