It is possible to replace the handles, but other writers are not correct in suggesting they are of a standard size. Different manufacturers have different hole spacings, so it is rarely possible to use say Armitage Shanks handles on a Fordhams bath. It is like getting a spare part for a car, if you know the make and model you will be OK.
You may like to consider having your existing handles re-chromed, which can be done quite reasonably.
On the other hand you can buy a complete new suite for just over £200 from somewhere like Jewsons who offer quality sanitary ware, not the cheap and cheerful stuff you find in the DIY sheds!!!

Assuming you can actually get underneath your tub to unscrew the existing handles you should be OK. You may find you need to pull out the bath to just replace the handles, in which case you might as well stick a new bath in!

yep although you will need to disturb the bath to get at the nuts on the wall side ( these are underneath the bath you will need to remove the side panel). This in turn means you will have difficulty re aligning bath with any tiles so what the hell...redo the whole house.

Yes. If it isn't all that old they tend to come in standard sizes. Unbolt one and take it to the DIY store to find one that matches. If this doesn't work out, you can go to a proper ironmonger (they don't just make stuff out of iron!) to make you some, as they aren't very complicated. It shouldn't cost too much. And try and buy stainless steel. I think it looks classier than chrome, and it won't rust!

Yes you can, all those big box hardware stores, and even the smaller ones, carry all sorts of handles. They aren't that expensive and can change the look of your bathtub. Also very easy to change, one or two screws usually is all it takes.

yes but you will need to remove bath panels and get underneath to unscrew the fittings. Have you tried Brillo pads to clean them?
