600 a month near loop will not get you anything that will be in a safe area!.....so you have a better chance of finding a SAFE place in the suburbs (and for that money u MIGHT find a place in south/southwest sub....you'll find nothing in north/northwest sub.)

this website has address, phone #'s and links to some agencies that might help.

You're asking for a whole lot for $600 a month. This is Chicago, honey, not Buttcrack, Arkansas. You want a rental apartment for $600 in downtown Chicago near all the attractions that is well protected and wheelchair accessible. And YOU don't even have a job. good luck with that!

First of all, you'll NEVER find a rental apartment in downtown Chicago for $600. Hell, you won't even find a RENTAL apartment in downtown. That's strictly condo-land. And did you ever think about gas, electricity, food? Is this handicapped person gonna pay for all of that too? You said his ENTIRE check for the month is $600. If that covers the rent, you won't have money for anything else, unless he gets food stamps or something. And most apartments want you to at least pay for electricity. What about furniture? Clothes? Entertainment? What about these malls and movies you want to live near? You don't even have a job so how are you going to shop at a mall or go to the movies? You'd better get used to shooting lower.

Forget about living in the Loop. There are places in Rogers Park that might suit you better. Click on the link below. This is one or the cheapest areas in the city right now in a good neighborhood and you STILL won't find anything for less than $625. It's near Loyola University, there's a movie theater in the neighborhood and there is easy train access to shopping areas or you can walk. The nearby elevated train station is handicapped acessible, so that will help.

Or you can try Edgewater, which is a little south of Rogers Park. (see other link). There are a couple of places that are $600 a month.

You can go west to the St. Ben's area (third link). but there's not a lot there.

Uptown is an up-and-coming area that is changing. if you act now maybe you can find something within your budget (fourth link).

Chicago has a great public transportation system so you can get anywhere fairly quickly. And all of the buses and most of the train stations have wheelchair access or elevators. But get used to the idea of traveling to get to the mall and movies. Not every neighborhood has a movie theater right next door.

You'd better do some more research first. Sounds like you're not really prepared for this if you think you can get an apartment in downtown Chicago for $600.

You should have been looking long ago..

I dont think your gonna find anything for $600 Near the loop... on top of which is also wheelchair friendly. I would say that your friend would definatly have to get some roommates, $600 isnt much... or try section 8 housing, but then your not so safe.

Talk to someone at HUD or DOH... let them know your situation, maybe they can help
