Good one.
Indeed it isnt a cup because you cant hold liquid with it, but in the whole world I think it is called like that, in Spanish its Copa del Mundo, and copa means cup, the cup you use to drink too.
But this comes from many yers ago, as the Jules rimet cup wasn't a cup too. It should be called a trophy.
But in tennis the Davis cup looks more like a bowl to make a fruit salad instead, and so on. I think the term cup has been generalised.

Like metaphors major competitions required by Football through out the years have been played for a traditional cup European cup the Uefa cup before it was call the Fairs cup trophies normally resembled a large urn vase, etc never looked like anything near a coffee mug or a tea cup. Cup de Monde its like the offside rule you either agree or disagree that its there.
Confused its football and if Mr Blatter keeps going the way he is the rules will be changed again and it might be a silver or gold plate like wimbledon one day.

Maybe cause it sounds sweeter than World Trophy or maybe in the early 1900's they did indeed had Cup the award and just kept the name.
