The fuel pump module as they call it is in the fuel tank, it is very expensive G.M. set the price for this. Even the aftermarket part is about the same price. My shop charges $536.00 for the Delco pump assembly and $150.00 for the labor to remove the fuel tank and install the pump assembly. This is what they cost.
Yes very expensive.
FORDM better do his homework before answering questions.

I would go to a parts store and buy the pump yourself. Mechanics buy their parts from the same place and mark them up 100%. Tell the parts store you need to try to get the pump close to a shops cost. I work for a car dealer and this pump usually cost $250-$300. Most shops can replace the pump in 2-3 hours. Even if they charge $50 an hour labor you can save some money.

The pump alone is around $90. the rest is labor. I think you should get some more quotes. That sounds a little on the HIGH side. Must be a dealer. Go to a small neighborhood shop, and it will probably be cheaper, and anyone can do that repair easily.

I'm not sure in your car, but in my ford aerostar 1997 you have to remove the gas tank and it was like a hole day work and in the older Chevrolet's was the same. The fuel pump goes inside fuel tank and some cars have access from the cabin removing the carpet but most vans doesn't

DAVE answered it exactly, and WHY? Fordm, would you want to go thru all that hassle to put a USED pump in? GM/Delco offers lifetime warranty on that part anyways. We're not used to pushing our Chevys' unlike Ford owners. Do it right the first time!

i doubt it does, whoever you have doing the repair is most likely ripping you off, or whoever they are getting the parts from is ripping them off.
i suggest doing an internet search for "1997 Chevrolet Astro parts" or some such search string. there are several sites that have huge listings of parts for just about every car, and there are even several that will, for a small fee, send a request for your part to a large list of used part suppliers.

parts and labor, the fuel pump is in the fuel tank, and it is a complete assembly... pump, pickup, sump, sender, piping and connectors, plus ... after market pumps might be purchased, which would mean disassembly of the module... more labor

Because the people that price these things know that you have to have it so they kind of have you over the barrel.
