for the autumn try asters they come a great variety of colours try some autumn crocus they should survive. For winter flowering try cyclamen, iris reticulata they grow approx 6in and are very hardy,winter aconite, snowdrops,crocus.Cushin saxifrage is very good it's spreads well and grows 2-4in in height and will last from late winter to mid spring and of course viola.. good luck happy gardening

Dahlias are late flowering, you lift the roots for the winter and replant next July. There are loads of different shapes, colours and sizes.
One plant that goes really well with roses is Lavendar, I'd use Munstead Dwarf. The scent helps keep aphids off the roses and the colour scheme is usually complimentary.

I really like Asters. They are better than mums for the fall. The purple ones are really pretty.
