Don't get me wrong. Zappa was great. But if his music is still being played a couple hundred years from now, then he might be considered one of the greatest. He has a lot of competion from those old guys who have been popular for centuries.

Zappa was not considered a composer and still isn't by the mainstream. I love Zappa, but when you sing about yellow snow, it will be very difficult for people to take you seriously.

Yes, this is a 9 year old port but I have to answer so that new readers can read and understand!
One only has to listen to the last recording he produced before his death, The Yellow Shark" Performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. This is some of the most brilliant orchestral music ever "composed". Along with volumes of orchestral music produced and written though out his life.
Yes, he write satire and comedy. Why? Because he enjoyed it. But his true passion was as he put it, "The serious music".
nough said!

I think it's analogous to George Gershwin who was regarded as only a popular song and 'comedy music' composer during his lifetime. Now regarded as a genius. "Porgy & Bess" was a flop, now it's a great achievement. Give Frank a little more time, his name is on more symphony programs despite the roadblocks his heirs throw up.

He was kind of a cult star like the Grateful Dead kind of. He wasn't mainstream enough. A lot of people weren't as accepting of his humor and musical ecclectiveness. He expressed himself using elements of jazz, classical, rock.
He sure attracted great musicians like Steve Vai and George Duke. He was an original but in many ways he may have been an acquired taste.
My favorite Zappa CD was Apostrophe and my favorite song was Cosmic Debris.

I think mostly because of his satire. He was a qualified conductor.
He did some great work in "shut up and play your guitar", and "the Grand Wazoo". Some one once told me he invented the wa-wa pedal. I don't know if its true. Anyway Frank Zappa die of prostate cancer a fewe years ago. Very sad.

Probably because he wasn't. He can't begin to stand up next to some of the greats: Lennon/McCartney, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Carole King, Bruce Springsteen, and countless others. Its like comparing apples and oranges to compare Zappa to some of these people and others.
