It's the ultimate job for the unskilled. All you have to do is lay there.

The way the welfare system is designed, it's actually counter-productive to work more. The more income you make, the more welfare money they take away. Initially, this is still a positive equation, but there's a point at which you lose medical and childcare benefits while not receiving commesurate increases in earnings. This sudden drop in net worth is detrimental to the motivation to work of people on welfare. Unfortunately, welfare is hard to impliment without similar problems no matter how it's been done in the past, so it remains one of most government's most controversial and regularly modified programs.

Because a lot of them don't know a better life. For instance, in a community in Michigan, the city has a 50%+ unemployment rate and it's difficult to find work. The only option they feel they have is to have a baby to get financial assistance. They may not be able to move.
Also, have you ever priced daycare?
The federal poverty guidelines show that a family of 4 must earn over $9.00 an hour based on a 40 hour per week job just to be at the poverty level. Try to earn that much money and pay out daycare (at $2.00 per hour per child).
One job I worked, I made $12.50 per hour, but by the time I paid for my gas, taxes, and daycare and medical insurance, out of $500 per week I took home about $200 per week. Out of a $12.50 an hour job, that meant I barely made $4.50 per hour. How is that receiving so much more. And try to pay for groceries, utilities, house payment, clothing on $200 per week.
I'm fortunate that I have a husband that also works and I'm going to school for a better paying job, and I did not choose to have children to get welfare. In fact, I've never collected it.
But because I have talked with these women and walked a mile in their mocassins, I understand why there is that mindset.

Some have no choice, and they cannot seem to get out once they are in.
But if they only do a good job raising their own children it would help. the next generation.

sounds like you've been doing some thinking! good! a lot of people haven't been... they see welfare as "easy money" and have never seen anyone reap the benefits from a good job.

Because people are so lazy and they want someone to take care of them. They not as smart as me and you and who ever else see the problem with it. Now if maybe under the circumstance that it was need then I'm OK with it but its my hard earn money that the lazy people don't want to work I (we) the people that work our taxes pay them. So sad

because nobody taught them to be productive in society . so they do what they were taught live off other people. I think our welfare system should give more education and jobs then food stamps and free money .

why work or more when they can sit at home and make a little less. When sitting at home making money for nothing, why not pop out another child and double the check.
