If you own the PC, you can replace anything you want to.

You can replace them with those that come with Windows OS. Windows tends to have generic drivers for various devices. Although in some cases of the device is newer and you install generic Windows drivers you might not get all the features or options that come with the device if you were to install the drivers that came with the device from the manufacturer.

Oh it can def. be replaced. Probably by you! I have an IBM also and I have changed out a few things including adding a DVD drive.

Most likely it can be any CD-ROM drive. Most PC parts are atleast semi-universal.

they are in no way propriety, any standard cd rom unit can replace them within the case, and should be recongized by the motherboard assuming you install it correctly.
