I've always tried to figure this one out. But all in all I think Singaporeans think they are better than Malaysians and Malaysians are hating the fact that they were stuck on the wrong side of the island when the country was divided.
So its basically a playa hating game and it will go on for years.

This is a generally misguided and over rated opinion.
Some Malaysian or Singaporean hate each other, but let's not escalate the feelings nationwide. The governments has conflicting issues because they have their own countries' interests to think about. That is merely politics. It happens everywhere.
I think the more appropriate wording for this question would be "why do Singaporeans have different politic viewpoints from Malaysians?".
The people in both countries don't hate each other. Most of the people are very involved in politics, that's all.

It's just a long dispute since way back in history.
First the declaration of independent states then the causeway, claiming of land, the water issue, etc.
Really, why can't we all just get along? Personally, the Singaporeans I spoke to were of the opinion that Malaysians were rude & "behind" on many areas.
I mean sure, we have much to improve on but our lifestyle is way more affordable than say Singapore.
Even the locals in Singapore are feeling the pinch! Another thing , I don't get is if they hate us as much... why is there a growing number of license registered vehicles from Singapore crossing over to Malaysia during the weekends?

Technically, Singaporeans don't hate Malaysians. Which would beg the question why they would hate us. I'm not sure of it myself, but I have had many Malaysian friends before and none of them exhibit the animosity you seem to feel towards us.
I think this "hate" thing is a little over-rated. People who hate us usually call us too "snobby" (as above) and too "proud". But techinically speaking, why shouldn't we be proud of ourselves when we have accomplished so much more than our neighbour who has not? If we aren't proud of our accomplishments, then what do we have to be proud of?
And why do these people want us not to be so "proud"? Is it because they feel inferior to us even though they (geographically speaking) are so much bigger than us? It's not our fault that your government has failed to deliver like the Singapore government has. If you rather spend time grousing about how we "like acting as if we are better than the rest of you", why don't you spend more time MAKING your own country better, so you can look down on US this time with legitimate reasons?
And it's not that we don't give in. Every single time the problem starts on the Malaysian end - the issue of water: despite having signed an agreement that lasts until 2060~, Malaysia wanted to cancel the agreement and raise prices. There were TWO reviews previously available that they REFUSED to review prices at all. Why the sudden turnabout?
Don't tell me that Singaporeans don't give in. We don't ask for a lot of problems or create them in the first place.

This goes back to the time when Singapore used to be part of the Malaysia. In fact did you know that the name Malaysia actually incorporate both countries' names. Look carefully...or better still look on the web about the above.
These two countries will always have this problem. If its not Singapore demanding better water supply rates and asking Msians not to keep calling them "kiasu" its Malaysians rejecting The Singaporeans demand to use its airspace and supply sand if the new proposed bridge is finally built to replace the outdated and aging causeway between Johore Bahru and Woodlands.

Let's put it this way.
As a Singaporean, I would rather work with any other nationality.
The Malaysian Chinese are:
Capricious climbers, addicted to office politics
Incapable of putting their head down and doing honest work
Always looking for shortcuts
Inability to accept blame for their ****-ups
Genetically/Culturally wired to look down on people
Bear in mind this is from a working/colleague perspective.
I am sure they are different when it's family time, but hey.
If you're gonna behave like a cretin at work, I sure as hell am not going to associate with you outside of it.

I dont really think that a good question to start the discussion....
btw, as others point out, it might due different political view.
or some even maybe due to bad personal experiences.
but that dosent mean that the whole Singaporean hate the whole Malaysian and vice versa.
we cant simply stereotype people. one person's wrong doing shouldn't reflect on his/her society as a whole.
the best is to keep an open mind, learn about others, haf the 'worl-wide' knowledge and dont hate other ppl jus simple coz you want to.

i don't really know why but i suppose it has something to do with their past. remember that singapore used to belong to malaysia before they claimed independence from m'sia in 1965. well, that was problem #1. the (singaporean) area was pre-dominantly chinese and they did not felt like they had anything in common with the rest of m'sia. so, they wanted to separated. m'sia & (s'pore) had to put up a fight first before things became the way they are today: two different nations. problem #2, i think it is about water. i remember reading an article that s'pore was running out of water (or something like that). their main water supply was from m'sia. s'pore's terrain is not fit for any natural resources and let alone, mineral water. so, one day, s'pore & m'sia had another arguement about this. i believe, afterwards, m'sia wanted to cut off the water supply. s'pore became upset (naturally) and had to figure out a way to have their own water supply.
so, perhaps those two reasons are why singaporeans & malaysians alike hates each other. they should be nice to one another. after all, singapore has to thank malaysia for taking care of them before 1965 happened. a huge part of the singaporean culture actually belonged to m'sia first. and malaysians should be proud that their once, minor state has become a nation of its own. m'sia should feel like they're been a good parent that has let its son (s'pore - state) grow into a man (s'pore - country). haha... how corny does that sound? =P

My mom is from S'pore & my dad is from Malaysia. I was born in Malaysia. S'pore its like my second home. I think the issue here is just the Government. As far as people wise I have never had any problem with any S'porean. But now that I have lived in the U.S. for the last thirteen years anywhere you lived it is the same.
