I have heard of many organizations that "nominate" students. When in reality they are just looking for people that are willing to spend a load of money on their conference. They are usually good for networking and fun, but they arent really nominated.

"nominate" can mean almost anything

as you point out, for many of these organizations, the qualifications for nomination are to be someone they can get an address for that might attend their event

that doesn't mean the event is not valuable (as well as good for networking and fun)
