If you know what you are doing (and it sounds like you do) shopping for computer parts on eBay can be very cost effective. I have bought RAM and a video card in the last 6 months without a hitch.

without a doubt newegg.com best prices, fast shipping, cheap shipping, and great deals
yeah stay away from intel. AMD is the way to go. you don;t have to worry about keeping it cool, and even though it has a slower clock speed (i.e. 2.4 GHz), it still out performs an intel rated in some cases up to 4 GHz (even though they don;'t exist!!!!!) for example. an AMD 4000 is about equal to an intel pentium running at 4GHz while the AMD runs at only 2.4 GHz!!!! since this is the case, you don;t need to buy expensive water cooling systems, but a good heatsink/fan will make a difference.

I bought my whole system from the ground up from newegg.com Theyre usually pretty good about prices across the board, and definately trustworthy. They dont even ask questions about returns. Very refreshing.
I personally would go 64-bit seeing as how vista is coming down the pipe soon. To tide yourself over - grab XP pro x64 edition.

Try ebay. There are lots of sellers there with "stores" for pieces and parts as well as new systems. Most U.S. sellers will ship to Canada, and some sell from Canada, and others ship and sell internationally. The prices and shipping costs, are competitive with the standard market practices everywhere.
