You can. You can wear whatever you want.
Traditionalists say wearing anything other than off-white after Labor Day still is a bad idea.
But some fashion experts claim the rule is outdated, or never was meant to apply to all clothing. The Emily Post Institute says: "White can be worn 365 days a year. The old rule about wearing white only between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a thing of the past."

The fashion faux pas began for two reasons. The first reason being that in the summer months wearing lighter colors goes along with staying cool, and in the winter darker colors go along with staying warm. Another possibility of the unwritten rule’s origin dates back to the 19th and 20th centuries. During those years it became a status symbol for new members of the middle class, who were the only ones “permitted” to wear white post-Labor Day.

That rule is over exaggerated, and outdated. If you line in the Northeast, you shouldn't be wearing white shoes, jean, and accessories after labor day but that's it. If you live down south where it is warm you wear it.

Even up north the so called Winter White suit is in all year long, along with white wool and leather skirts and pants. Just not white we just put our white jeans, shorts and shoes away until nest spring. Everything else is OK.

You can wear whatever you want to wear. There is just this understood "rule" that you don't wear white after labor day, probably because white really isn't a fall/winter color.
But if you live somewhere hot, like Florida or California, you can wear white and pastels all year long and no one really cares.

Because people make up strange and pointless fashion rules so they can make fun of you when you do wear white after labor day.

That used to be one of the fashion 'rules' but it went out of style long ago. You also couldn't wear blue with green because it 'clashed'. Like green leaves against a blue sky look awful, right? There were dozens of those dippy rules, but they mostly went overboard during WW2 when people didn't have time to worry about that sort of thing, and when rationing made you appreciate whatever your could get.
Now you can wear whatever you want, whenever you want, as long as you are decently dressed.

It's the end of summer and funky white sandals, belts, hats, shorts. It's like an uniform policy. You just don't. But I do anyway.

I have heard this before in american movies and I always wondered why. Does wearing white symbolise something?

Well, it is true, that is now considered an outdated fashion idea and you don't need to believe it anymore. But if you are like me and *absolutely* need to know why any even had to believe in it once, here's a link to head for:
