I always preferred Picard as he is a much better actor. I love his voice, and he is very nice looking and seems kind! He doesn't seem full of himself like William Shatner does. Oh, but you asked about leadership....hmmm...I'd still go with Picard!

Picard actually followed the Prime Directive, or at least intended to to the best of his ability. Kirk was quite the cowboy and didn't seem to give a rats behind about it. In either case it was their attitudes towards this basic idea that colored their leadership.

Personally I lean toward Picard because of this(purely from a philosophical point of view) but the fact is Kirk actually had more crew loyalty.

They lead in different ways, but do have some things in common. Both are excellent at gaining the trust of their officers and crew. They expect the best from those under their command and receive it. Kirk flies by the seat of his pants, Picard is more of a patriarch. Picard always annoyed me, until about the third season of TNG, then I loved him, but Kirk had a MUCH better movie run, though. The Wrath of Kahn and the Undiscovered Country are two of my favorite movies. Ever.

Picard exemplifies strong leadership without the "getting the girl" mentality. Though I like Kirk, I have far more respect for John Luke!

Picard. Kirk had the tendency of leading with his groin at times, rather than his head. Picard was straightforward and the best captain.

Picard. He knows how to delegate. Kirk would do everything himself. Most times it is not possible to complete a mission all by yourself.

Picard would be more effective, because he isn't as emotional as Kirk...Kirk was good but he was too daring.

Kirk.... because he didn't ever dilly-dally around.... and he had a good sense of humor (more evident in the Star Trek movies) and knew how to have fun with the crew; everyone knows a good work enviornment makes for a happier and better crew! Plus he was buffier and knew how to use the taser!

Picard because he's an arrogant Frenchman (which is slightly ironic because he's played by the very Brisith Patrick Stewart).
