I don't understand why the abortion debate is termed pro-choice vs pro-life. I believe in a woman's right to choose whether to have a baby. I just think she makes this choice every morning when she "chooses" not to put a birth control pill in her mouth, every month she "chooses" not to go get a depo shot, every time she "chooses" to get laid (especially without a condom, diaphragm, spermicide etc.) The argument can be made I suppose that birth control is not fool proof, but this being common knowledge don't you to "choose" to take that chance when you have sex? I think you have made your "choice" well BEFORE you find out you are pregnant. Why don't they call it what it is, pro-abortion? What about the father, why can't he CHOOSE not to be parent post pregnancy? He doesn't get a choice whether to have to pay child support the rest of his life for a child he did not "choose" to bring into the world.

Because the debate isn't about abortion. Pro-life and pro-choice are arguing two entirely unrelated issues.

Pro-life people say "abortion is bad". Pro-choice advocates say "The government should be making personal decisions like that". It's not about whether abortion is good or bad. It's about who gets to make the decisions.

The issue distills down to this: someone is going to choose. It's either going to be the individual, or it's going to be the majority (through enacted laws). If the majority gets to choose, then they are effectively imposing their belief system -- which is almost always religiously-based -- on everyone.

As far as the father -- neither parent gets to chose post-pregnancy. Or more actually, their choices are limited to giving the child up for adoption or not. After conception, the father doesn't provide any physical life-sustaining care for the embryo/fetus, the way the mother does. So he can't opt-out of that burden.

Oce the child is born, both parents are equally responsible for support (including financial support). So, there is no difference at that point in the available choices. The post-birth financial-support requirements are entirely unrelated to the pre-birth life-support support issues that are the mother's sole burden.

So, the father does have a choice, before conception (when his contribution ends). The mother has a choice (except in cases of rape) before conception and until viability, because that's the period that her continued involvement is necessary. After that, both parents are equally on the hook.

Pro choice literally means you're for the right to choose (in this case, whether or not to abort).

You're right when she chooses every morning to take birth control or practice safe sex. But she can also choose to keep the baby or abort it. Some people aren't emotionally and/or financially ready for being responsible for another life. It's okay, nothing wrong with that. They deserve the right to choose, because it's better for them not to have a baby than to end up A) absuing it, B) ditching it, or C) hating it.

Pro choice means the mother can decide whether to have an abortion or not. Pro life means you believe the fetus is a life form and has the right to exist. This means the death of a fetus is the same as the death of a human being. Therefore, if you kill another living human, you have commited a crime.

... every moment she "chooses" to get raped, every time she "chooses" to have her pills not work, every time she "chooses" to have her boyfriend beat her bloody and walk out when he finds out she's pregnant....

Contraception is a *very* new thing; 100 years ago it barely existed, and 50 years ago it was still illegal in many states. It's no wonder many people don't use it well.

A lot of people aren't even taught about the risks of sex--the "abstinence only" education is so skewed, some of them think you can't get pregnant if she doesn't orgasm, or they think that certain positions won't cause pregnancy, because the schools are so busy telling them not to have sex, they don't bother explaining how it works.

Myself, I'm not sure why the other side calls itself "pro-life;" they don't seem to care about the life at all after the birth, and they don't care about the mother's life. They're into racking up birth numbers, not in supporting the sacredness of life.

Sweetheart, we call it pro choice because we believe that we have the "choice" to do with our bodies as we feel is best. I've never met a person who is "pro abortion" and I don't even think those nutty liberals I've encountered here are "pro abortion." You've have to be a pretty sick individual to be "pro abortion." That's said, how come so many call it "pro life" when you are for the death penalty? Either you're pro life or you're not. You can't be pro some life but not others. So, really, you are NOT pro life, you are anti abortion or anti choice. DH and I can make the decision on what's best for us and our family, not you. That's why I'm a Catholic, conservative, Republican who is pro choice.

Pro-Life is an oxymoron also. Most so called pro-lifers believe in the death penalty. While I see your point and agree with it that abortion is a damn poor means of birth control, if you outlaw it then girls will still get them. I lived in a time when it was illegal and many girls got them in sleazy motels and back alleys and many died from infection and bleeding to death. Some were found with a coat hanger still hanging out of them, if that is a ugly picture that is because it is. But it is the truth.

it's a propaganda term. just like No Child Left Behind. you couldn't just say "but i want children to be left behind!" because see how bad it sounds? They call it pro-choice instead of like pro-life vs. pro-death. i think it refers to the womans' CHOICE to get the abortion. and i think she should have that choice. it doesn't mean every woman WILL choose to have an abortion!

It should be termed pro-abortion. The pro-abortionists are even against adoption as an alternative. So, to them, any un-aborted child is bad for their cause.

There is NO SUCH THING as pro-abortion.
Pro-abortion would mean that people are going around telling EVERYONE to get an abortion.
That does NOT happen. There aren't people like that.
