I would also suggest Bradley Method or Lamaze classes if they are available.

My disclaimer - I'm not a physician, and you should never take advice from the Internet at face value - talk to your family physician!

That being said, here's the thing - you may not know if you'll need a c-section until the last minute. There are a ton of factors that go into this. There isn't any prep you can do that will help avoid a c-section, though you should definitely keep active and exersize during pregnancy - the better shape you are in, the easier the delivery. If you are stronger, it may help you push better which MAY help avoid a c-section if you don't tire as easily.

However, if it is at all reassuring, don't fear a c-section - you'll barely feel it if at all. They numb you up with an epidural, which kills all sensation in the lower half of your body. Medicine has come a long way in that arena and they can do it quickly, painlessly with little scarring. The most important thing is the health of your child.

Hope that helps...

C-sections can be a scary thought. I should know I have had 2 and my 3rd is scheduled for Aug 4. I am not going to tell you not to worry, because there is always a chance that something can go wrong at the last minute. However, I will tell you that unless you have a medical emergency or a stubborn breech baby your chances for having a c-section are relatively low. Do not fear a c-section if it is a medical emergency though because chances are the outcome of a c-section will be much better than the risks that may be present for you and your baby. C-sections are a routine medical intervention and if you trust your doctor it should go basically without a hitch. Keep healthy, exercise and maintain a healthy weight, you should be fine. Don't worry girl, in the end you will still have a beautiful healthy baby no matter how it is delivered.

I did everything I could to have a regular delivery and my baby ended up getting turned just enough that he wouldn't come down the birth canal and his head was bumping into my pelvic bone with each contraction. After trying to turn him without hurting him, we decided a c-section would be safer for both of us. There isn't a lot you can do about the baby's body position because they move around inside much like they do in your arms. At least while there is still room in there. There are a few things we learned in birthing class to try to make vaginal delivery easier... there is of course the breathing (which worked great for me!), and there is an exercise where your partner can massage and "stretch" your vaginal opening with his fingers. Doing this can help reduce the need for an episiotomy during the birth (I wouldn't start this so early in your pregnancy however... this was something they told us about near the end of our class.. at nearly 8 months). If possible, see if there is a birthing class in your area. Your doctor may know or the hospital where you intend to give birth should know.
I must say though the c-section was not nearly as bad as I had thought (feared) it would be and because I had taken care of myself during the pregnancy, I recovered very quickly. I would say the best things to do are to eat healthy (lots of fruit and veggies), take your prenatal vitamins and get some basic exercise such as walking. I wouldn't do anything really strenuous, but keeping yourself in shape is the best way to have a healthy pregnancy. If there is ever anything you are unsure about, always ask your doctor. He is the one with your medical history and can help guide you through any questions you have.

The question is who told you you HAD to have a C-section. Did your OB/GYN mention that to you. Anyway not everyone has a C-section only some circumstances is it done. Most doctors who care try to avoid it. If youre in a circumstance where it CAN'T be avoided then its done. Have a deep talk with your doctor about your fears/concerns.

Dont worry about what is going to happen 7-8 months from now. Concern yourself with the here and now and enjoy your pregnancy, stage by stage. Youre honestly thinking too far ahead. If you keep doing that you'll drive yourself crazy.

I really doubt there is anything you can do to avoid a c-section. I assume that this is your first child / you did not have c-section in the past. Even if you did vaginal births after c-section are being done.

If you are really that scared, talk with your OB.

I would suggest you go to a La Leche league meeting. These ladies will have tons of helpful advice, and while they can be a little over zealous, they are kind, good hearted helpful women with heaps of experience. Good luck!
