Typically when a team starts to win titles you see fans popping out of nowhere. I noticed more 49er fans showing themselves after 1981, and throughout the rest of the 80s and 90s it seemed like every 3rd person you met liked them. When a team goes into the decline, many will drop off. People like to associate with a winner.
