He was being insulted by the Italian bloke!!
Anyway, I feel sorry for Zidane! He has always been a great player and a fine gentleman. So, I am sure he was hearing quite rude words, which, on top of all of the other pressures, made him "burst"!
I am not applauding Zidane's attitude! Just trying to understand...

The most obvious reason behind the appawling headbutt, is that the Italian defender said something very offensive to Zidane. But no matter what he said to Zidane does not make up for the disgusting reaction on Zidane's part!

Most everything that has been heard are rumors... Neither player has yet (as far as I know) made a statement about what was said. However, it must have been something extreme, because Zidane is for the most part a very cool customer (not in any way justifying or defending Zizou's actions). What was seen yesterday was more rare than the alignment of the planets.

Beyond rumours, I don't know yet and am eager to find out when Zizou or his spokesperson makes that long-awaited public statement and Fifa's enquiry is published.
However, did you ever wonder how does the well-built, muscular, Materazzi eject and crash down three feet away in "crucifying pain" from Zidane's impulsive head butt?
Zizou has in in-borne and well-known dualism : brillant talent / limited patience when provoked. The latter weakness, well-known (he has played in Torino's Juventus) and was probably exploited in the Final in a well-programmed ambush to provoke him with extremely personal and humiliating insults -- other than the normal dozens of insults usually yelled to and fro in heavily fought matches -- so that he might react that way.
Zizou is not a moron. Although he has had some irascible outbursts and red cards in his career, he would not have done this, knowing full well that French President Jacques Chirac is watching a few metres away, along with the scrutinizing eyes of 30 cameras and 1 billion people. He was unwillingly and unwittingly provoked/programmed into making a statement for the world to see; a statement of such magnitude that it would certainly mean a guaranteed explusion.
Well-done Mr. Materazzi!.. What was in fact "disgraceful" here is not Zizou, but you! I do hope FIFA's disciplinary committee ends up knowing what words you uttered to Zizou and consequently charges you with the full extent of the punishment available for the most treacherous player. Long live good Italian soccer and long live the French multi-cultural world-class soccer team and captain Zizou!
PS. In response to Mr. Einstein " Madge"s comment here; I understand how people who write books (have you ever read one?) or clear journalistic prose here would be totally beyond your grasp and therefore classified as "crap"... I feel sorry for you...

He didn't as you say, "punch the Italian," he headbutted Matterazzi. Nobody knows why, because neither Zizou or Matterazzi have released a statement about what happened. There are a lot of rumors flying about though, ex. M. called Zizou a terrorist, he insulted his mother, he called his sister a prostitute. But the only statement that has been released was by Zizou's agent, he said that Matterazzi made a " very serious" comment. The truth will come out soon... Until then, we're just going to have to wait and see.

This is just my own personal opinion, but he should have just kept his cool no matter what the Italian said. Unfortunately, he has been vicious before, stomping on the back of a fallen player. Recovering myself from an unrelated spinal cord injury, I just shiver when I think of what Zidane could have done.

Zidane actually head-butted Matarazzi. I'm very sure it was racially motivated cos Zidane is naturally a calm and collected player.

Matarazzi apparently called Zidane a dirty terroritst (because Zidane is a muslim) but today Matarazzi said that he didn't know what terrorist meant.
And it was a headbutt.
