98 will probably be the only thing a system that age will be able to run.
the system requirements for windows 2000 and xp will be more than a system that currently runs windows 95 can handle.
Here are the links to system requirements for a few operating systems so you can see what your system might be able to handle.

Disposing of old computers is a hassle and a lot of people try to get round it by 'donating'. Anything using Windows 95 just isn't worth using; it's vulnerable when connected to the Internet because you won't be able to run the latest anti virus and anti trojan or firewall software. It will just about work as a word processor. Even a charity won't thank them for this pc.
I'd politely decline the offer and start saving for a cheap desktop.

It depends on how powerful the hardware is. I think that you will probably have to upgrade some components. You can probably upgrade it to Windows 98 and I have seen Windows 98 computers upgraded to Windows XP so I'm sure that it is possible.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/sysreqs.mspx - contains the basic requirements for Windows XP.

Depends on how much of a processer it has, the amount of ram and hard drive space. XP is a large operating system. Chances are, if the computer is running on windows 95, its super old.

I would say that if it is old enought to still have window 95 that upgrading is impossible. Computers have changed so much since that operating system that you simply would not get the parts.
If you are in the UK I have some low spec machines for sale. £30 each. cheap cheap cheap

If the hardware is as old as the operating system(95,96, or 97) then don't bother trying to upgrade, it won't be able to handle the newer software and wouldn't be useful for most of the things people use computers for nowadays.. Better to find something a bit newer.

i couldnt even load xp on to windows 98 (1st edition) even though i had expanded the hard drive on it. I have invested in a laptop now with a basic processor for this day and age, and even this runs slow at times...so, no, i really dont think it would be worth yr while even trying to do it, unless u get a more up to date system
...sorry...hope im of som help
