how do i check these things? is there a monthly maintanace that i should perform? Im talking about basic things, in which i dont have to purchase a service or what not. I just reloaded win98 and stuck in an extra stick of memory and it still seems to be sluggish. I tried to run a video and it was way too slow. im using the latest version of media player and anytime i try to watch a video it skips and pauses. I just thought that an empty hard drive with double the memory would do the trick. if you have any thoughts let me know. Iv already scanned my disc, defragged, virus scanned and run adaware. what else could it be?

Bandwidth checker: dslreports.com has a speed checker
You have to have a decent connection in the first place to have fast speed. There are NO functioning software speed increasers, they just remove some functionality of websites to make them load faster. Try also checking your firewall/virus settings, depending on how they are configured, you will limit your speed as your virus checker scans incomming info.

Check these Web sites:

The difference between bits and bytes can be confusing. Most bandwidth speed ratings are measured in bits while files are measured in bytes. For example, I have a 768 Kbit/s upload speed in bits, but my speed in bytes is around 80 KB/s

lowercase b = bit
upper case B = byte

For increasing your internet speed, I would just suggest (if you have cable) to upgrade your account like I did.

a slow video card, or slow cpu might be your problem...while running video, turn off any apps that might be running in the background that might be using system resources, like antivirus, or bittorent proggies....
go to toast.net to test your internet speed
