Root rot! Can I stop it?

Question

Some of my pansies have died from root rot. There are still some living pansies left in the pot.
Will it spread to them?
Is it safe to plant new flowers in the pot?
How can I stop it from spreading?

Thank you all so far for the great advice.
Does anyone know if it will automatically spread to the remaining plants, even if I watch and reduce the watering?

Watering at the wrong time, such as in the evening, will allow perfect conditions for root rot. Plants need to be watered in the morning,so that they have it for the afternoon sun. Watering in the evening allows for an excess of standing, or unused water, and it soaks into the fine-membraned stalk of the plant. Also, too
much watering will have the same affect. make sure you have a rich, but, loose soil that will allow for excess water to drain through. this was the answer in my case with impatiens. good luck !

If you are now giving the orchid proper culture and care consistent with other Oncids that you have and are growing well then you do not need to do anything else special for this one. The overwatering by itself is not what kills roots, overwatering is an ongoing situation for a potted orchid, however an orchid in active growth will continually renew root tissues and actively transport standing water out of the pot and into the air. This process slows and/or stops in a majority of orchids brought indoors. The semi-dormant roots will not renew themselves and the pot environment becomes increasingly stagnant and bacteria laden. Then the roots begin to disintegrate. So more drastic measures are not called for beyond ensuring that your new Oncid is indeed in conditions conducive to active growth.

I believe root rot is caused by overwatering. You might take them out,add more soil and put them back in
