I just found a gerbil hiding behind the railing outside my apartment. I gave it some food (peanuts) and water and I can't really find anywhere better to keep him than in this big cleaning bucket. I went around and knocked on some doors and put up a simple sign outside my door, saying that I'd found a lost gerbil, but no one knows who it belongs to.

I asked the front office about it and apparently, three other grebils have been found around the apartment complex, so it may be that someone just dropped off a bunch of them and forgot about them. I have no interest in keeping him as a pet (I don't really like gerbils and he bit me twice already) and I don't really know what to do with him now.

Will pet stores take in animals like this? Is there any sort of online gerbil adoption site?

Call your local Animal Control agency and turn it over to them. If they won't come and get it, you can take it to your local animal shelter and they will. Don't tell them it bit you or they will have to kill it to test it for rabies. You can try local pet stores and they may take it from you and trade you an instore balance of some kind. Good luck. Oh, and I am sorry that there are idiots answering your question with gerbiling jokes. Some people just have nothing useful to say.

Here's my best advice...call your local pet stores, explain the situation, and they will either a) take him off your hands or b) put your name/phone number on a "free pet" bulletin board. You can also call a local vet...sometimes they will help find homes for unwanted pets. Most likely, the pet store will take him...most already have several gerbils anyway so what's one more?

Hope this helped.

Call your local Animal shelter or humane society. Most will accept gerbils. Get your phone book and look up either animal shelters or humane societies in the yellow pages, or call a vet's office to get a rescue/shelter number. Good luck!

You can take it to your local humane society. They'll adopt it out. That's where I've got all my gerbils. Thay do bite, but not hard, but it is annoying. My brother's gerbil bit him and wouldn't let go, it drew blood. But, gerbils are nice. Most times.

Just call your local Humane Society and tell them your bringing it in so they can get a cage ready for him.

P.S. Gerbils don't get rabies~

I doubt that the pet store would take it because of the possibility that it has been used for medical research. I think your best bet is the local humane or animal rights contact. You might also try the fire department (non emergency number please) they often have to deal with owner-less pets after a fire and they might have some suggestions.

Call the humane society - they might take him. Also sometimes schools will take them on as class pets. Or call a pet store and see if they want to buy them - although they usually only take young or baby animals.

I would start with a for free gerbil signs and put up wherever I could.
and then call the pet store nearest me(neighborhood) and ask if they would take it.
go to your local newspaper and ask to put in a found ad; they do these for free at our newspaper called the star beacon.

where are you? cause if you're in Mass, I'll take him. If not call the local animal shelter, hospital, or pet store. I'm pretty positive that the pet store won't take it unless you lie to them about how you came across it, something like your cousin gave you it cause they don't want it anymore. But the animal shelter might take him off your hands.
