As someone has already pointed out, Symantec and mcaffee will scan your computer for you for free. However, there is an exceptional antivirus available from grisoft, FREE for home use. I have recommended it to a lot of my clients and use it on a few of my own computers. It is a fully functional antivirus software with free virus definitions available for life.

This page will provide you with all the information you need as well as the link to the download.

viruses - Avast anti-virus. (download it for free from http://www.download.com/)

As far as removing unused programs, the control panel program "Add/remove programs" will tell you how often you use a program.

You can also run msconfig from Start Menu->Run... to look at your start up programs.
