it's the thought of an ordinary joe or jane making it big. people do look up to that , and it kinda makes them think extraordinary things can happen to normal people. So, it becomes like a beautiful trainwreck that you can't be pulled away from. Also I think America likes music in general, so it gives us an escape every week. And no, Taylor Hicks is not 40. He has had grey hair for a long time. A sort of condition makes him have premature gray. Jennifer Lopez has the same problem. She has had to dye her hair since she was a teenager because of the problem.

He is 29, but does look older.
I wish I had an answer as to the fascination of it. Maybe because it seems like an every day "Joe" can win something big, and that feeds into human fantasy.
I enjoy the audition part of it. :) Those people are crazy. Especially the ones that are horrible and can't understand why the judges don't think they are great.

There is absolutely nothing great about American Idol it's actually retarded if you ask me. The guy who won was in no way an idol to me.â¥

The only reason I watch is to hear Simon's comments. If he wasn't on the show, there'd be no show. The winner (Taylor Hicks) looks like he's 45 and he's actually 27. I don't see much talent though!

I have no idea what's so great about it. I used to watch the first few episodes to see the really awful people sing and make fools of themselves. Now I think I'd rather watch paint dry....or my dog lick himself.

1) get over the age thing. not everyone with talent is going to be old enough for you to have graduated with.
2) My fascination with it is Simon's relentless quest to make kids cry. By giving them an unadultered dose of reality, he saves them from public embarassment... by embarassing them in public.
Supposedly it prevents no-talent hacks from getting singing deals (Hilary Duff, i'm talking to you), but they still slip through sometimes (Kelly Clarkson, i'm talking to you).

Nothing, it sucks. Mediocrity abounds and is rewarded with rediculous singing contracts for people that should limit their singing to in the shower.
