he should definetly be punished if he actually said that but Zidane should not have let it provoke him since that's what Materazzi was trying to do all along

What Materazzi actually said is still subject rumours at the time this forum question is being posted and the world will know when Zizou and/or his spokesperson make this long-awaited statement.

Zizou has in in-borne and well-known dualism : brillant talent / limited patience when provoked. The latter weakness, well-known (he has played in Torino's Juventus) and was probably exploited in the Final in a well-programmed ambush to provoke him with extremely personal and humiliating insults -- other than the normal dozens of insults usually yelled to and fro in heavily fought matches -- so that he might react that way.

Zizou is not a moron. Although he has had some irascible outbursts and red cards in his career, he would not have done this, knowing full well that French President Jacques Chirac is watching a few metres away, along with the scrutinizing eyes of 30 cameras and 1 billion people. He was unwillingly and unwittingly provoked/programmed into making a statement for the world to see; a statement of such magnitude that it would certainly mean a guaranteed explusion.

Well-done Mr. Materazzi!.. When Zizou finally talks and FIFA's disciplinary committee ends up knowing what humiliating words (racist or otherwise) you uttered to this great player and person, I hope you will be consequently charged with the full extent of the punishment available for the most treacherous player and stripped of the honours of a World Cup. Long live good Italian soccer and long live the French multi-cultural world-class soccer team and captain Zizou!

Materazzi should be penalized..I'm sure a pro like Zidane knew very well the cause of his action and wouldn't wana end his career that way. I believe he must've had a very strong reason to act that way since he did'nt care about the impact anymore. FIFA should do something about this..Where's the so called FAIR PLAY??I'm so frustrated with the Italian, using dirty tactics to win, tarnished their own reputation..what a moron. They should've shown that they're really a great team instead

Once concrete evidence is given, ie: after Zidane comes out and tells the world exactly what happened, I think Materazzi is going to get penalised somehow for his actions. Afterall, the main message of the world cup this year was to stop racism, so Materazzi directly breached that message - lets hope he gets punished, because then Zidane's actions, as severe as it was, can be understood and not labelled as "animal-like" or whatever the media labelled him to be

Oh come on guys! Even if Materazzi did say anything, violence does not do justice. Zidane should have been able to control himself, violence is not a solution. And yes the moto is.."say no to racism", well I say no to violence. Too bad for Zidane, he retired with a red card and with shame for what he did. I believe that soccer was the least of the contact sports and Zidane wnet against that. In the end, I have to say bravo italia for playing a good, clean game. Viva Italia!!!!

My friend heard it on the radio - Materazzi called Zidane's mother a whore & since Zidane is from a Muslim family - well, you know what will happen...

I think Materazzi will be handed out a severe suspension.

If it was true that Materazzi spoke offensive language to Zidane, and if he (Zidane) could not take it, he could always returned similar statement to Materazzi since reporting an abusive language complaint may not be easily accepted as an admissible evidence, however, Zidane shouldn't take laws in his own hand.

forget materazzi getting penalised. what zidane had to sit out 5 mins of the game big deal,. they should have fined him or something. the whole world was watching the final and he acted in a absolutely disgraceful manner. i cant beleive some people on here are so biased that they are sticking up for him.

according to an italian lip reader zidane said something to marco and then he called zidane a liar. then he said i wish an ugly death to your family and go f*** yourself. and for that zidane acted like a savage. the f word is said constantly in football, aswell as mum insults. i mean zidane sweared at him first anyways. and he got what he deserved, to get sent off and disgraced, and to lose the final.

I know that something pretty awful must have been said for Zizou to lose his cool like that... I think that the truth will come out in the next couple of days. Then we will all be able to decide for ourselves wheter or not Zidane was justified in taking our Materazzi. When the truth comes out, I hope that Materazzi is penalized, because it was Zizou's last game. For him to be targeted like that in his last game... nobody deserves that... If he did say something, then that was truly a low blow and he deserves to be punished.

if what you say is true then zidane should've kept his cool until after the game. the whole point of materazzi's insulting was to make zidane lose his cool, and he succeeded. obviously materazzi should be penalized (if that's actually what he said) because FIFA was all over discouraging racism and obviously materazzi would've violated all of the association's rules and policies

Nothing will happen to Materazzi as nobody knows what he said. maybe it was bad, maybe it wasn't. All we know is Zizou got violent and no words can justify that. If I'm ever on trial for anything I hope many of you lot aren't on my jury! So far today Materazzi has called him a terrorist, said his mother is a prostitute and called his family evil. Why should he be the one who is judged here? Nobody on here as the first idea of what really happened.
