People seem to be laying blame on Materazzi. Zidane has to be in control of his actions. Anyone who has played any kind of sports will tell you there's a lot of garbage talked on the field.
He was the leader of that team, and he let them down. Teams look to their leaders to lead, not get thrown out.
And this talk about other teams might have made a better final, well they all lost.
Why would they have been better if they weren't good enough to win?

I would have liked to see Zidane walk away from that comment and finish the game in which France Dominated the play.
Zidane is human and more than that ..... a man that will be respected. He showed the World that Materazzi is a punk.
France lost in 2006 ... but History will remember their dominate play and the legendary play of Zidane over the 2006 World Cup winners...who were they again???

As of now, anything that is reported regarding what Materazzi may have said is pure speculation. Some say it was a racist slur, others say it was about Zidane's wife, mother and/or sister. But I suppose rumor becomes reality often times.

Materazzi called Zidane a terrorist, Zidane comes from Algeria + he was wounded to the shoulder + he was tired + he is 35 years old.

In my book, words are often more painful than actions, well, except for guns. The wound will often heal, but the bad thoughts can haunt one for a very long time. I am curious to know what the other guy has said to Zidane to make him really mad and turned back to head-butt the other guy. On that note, it is sad to see Zidane ended his brillian career on a bad note like this. He wasn't even allowed to get the honor to stand on the stage to get the silver metal for 2nd place.

Look..... bottom line.... Zidane lost his temper. Trash talking goes on all the time in some form or another in EVERY sport. The whole point is to make the other guy lose his cool and take him off his game..... and it worked this time. Not only did it take Zidane out of HIS game.... it took him out of THE game....

Well I blame Materazzi,he should have kept his mouth shut, and he should have known that Zidane doesn't play like that, especially when it's close to the end.He did it on purpose to make Italy win.

i don't care if Materazzi said he slept with Zidane's mom! Zidane lost his temper and went out on a very embarrasing note so all of you that are trying to make up excuses for him, get over it!

I think the Italian players well knew that pressure was on Zidane, knew about his temper and just went in for the kill... They needed Zidane out of the game before it went to PKs. I guess that is the dirty, dark side of soccer.

It happens...people lose their temper sometimes, especially if they are pushed to their limits. Materazzi deserved to be headbutted by Zidane; he doesnt exactly play nice if you've ever seen him play.

And btw Zidane is 34.

Zidane is a great player. But he lost his cool should not have happened. It is unsportsmen like conduct. Even France's team did not like it (He was not on the podeum they left him in a dressing room).
