When I bought the car, I was told the gas tank leaked. There is a discoloration on the tank where gas has run down the side, but it originates from above the seam and I have put my head/hand up there as far as I can and can't see or feel any holes or rusted out places. Is there another way to check for leaks without removing the tank or filling it with $3.00/gallon gas?

Sorry, I should add that I never put more than half a tank of gas in the car because it appears to leak from the top if it is leaking.

Light a match. You'll find it.

Once you've extinguished your car, go buy a new tank. Aside from all the obvious annoyances, you're basically driving a Pinto right now. You could have someone try to weld the leak, but you'd be better off replacing it - labor shouldn't be too bad, and you should be able to find a fairly cheap gas tank at a salvage yard (depending on model).

You, or a qualified mechanic, will need to remove the tank, and you should quit driving the vehicle until this has happened. You're driving (literally) a time bomb, and your gas tank could explode at any time.

You need to consider this because if your car catches fire, burns up and is totalled, and they find out you knew there was a problem, insurance will not cover the loss; additionally, if this happens to your car and you lie about it, and they find out, you will be prosecuted and convicted of a felony for fraud.

You will definitely smell the gas if it was leaking especially when you first start the car. If in doubt, you can bring it to have someone put it on a lift and see--it only takes a minute. Good luck!
