The guy walks like crazy and I realize you need to put men on base but given that the Padres don't have many RBI machines in the lineup, shouldn't be be taking more hacks. I realize Petco's not a hitter-friendly park, but come on -- the guy should have at least 20 HRs given the stats he put up with Pittsburgh.

Absolutely not. Getting on base is the key to scoring runs. Also, you get a much better chance of hitting a pitch well if you swing at those only in the sweet spot.

Most of the greatest hitters(Ruth, Williams, Bonds, Mantle) walked alot. By refusing to swing at bad pitches, they only connected with good ones.

Look at the yearly leaders among runs scored by team. It usually corresponds better to OBP than to any other single statistic.

Before the Padres signed Giles to an extension over the off-season they did a study to project his future numbers. They realized his days of 20+HRs were behind him, but they signed him anyway because overall his OPS numbers were going to stay steady. His runs produced numbers are very good, though yes, he could be doing better. In the end, I'm sure it will even out. The Padres with the help of Giles are preaching patience throughout their organization. While being selective doesn't necessarily mean looking for a walk, that just comes as a side effect. Additionally, if the people behind Giles were more consistent, all the fastballs he got wouldn't come. Cameron has also been hot, which has lowered Giles RBI chances recently, as well.

Nah i don't think anybody can walk too much. The idea of the game is to get baserunners on base so people can drive them in. It's not Giles' problem that the General Manager can't sign players to hit behind him, or the Manager can't find the right place for him in the lineup.
