World War 3 could start tomorrow but nobody would care, all they want to hear about is football, how shallow can man be?!!!

Yes all mussolini and Stalin both use world cup and football to push thier idealisms. Franco also used the rivaly between Real Madrid and Barcelona to his ideals. Brazilian goverment uses the world cup to bring the whole country together and forgeting the countries problems.

Well football and sport in general have been used as propaganda vehicles by the examples given above, for instance tony blair sweeped into government on the back of 'cool brittania', britpop and euro 96, sport unites people creates a feelgood factor, but i think you chose your words wrong in the question, brainwashing another ball game, you can't brainwash a billion people

Nonsense. There has been just as much news coverage as ever. I don't think "everybody" was focusing on the World Cup. Most of the people I know couldn't care less about it.

Somehow taking a month off every four years doesn't qualify as a real threat to world order. If I was a politician and knew I had to wait another 47 months to hide my deeds I'd probably have to have myself committed!

The world has continued to turn here in the U.S. Hardly anybody pays attention to it here. Bush brainwashes us in other ways.
