possibly a transmission/engine speed sensor or modulator valve. it may be burned out from overheating or stressful usage and it won't gear-up properly. i had to have mine replaced after 64,000-miles of roadway Hell. ha ha but my ride is still runnin' like the day i first drove her. head to the transmission shop if necessary.

I think 4000 rpm's would put you at what, about 80-85 mph? If that's the case, maybe the transmission is starting to go because you're riding her too hard; My Ford is usually a steady 2500-2800 rpms at max 65mph; If you're going only 60 mph and still show 4000+ rpms, then you may have an internal computer glitch(I had 1 recently that felt like the car was pulling back, odometer not turning(slowly or not at all), tachometer was deviating on it's own-at 60mph would start at 0 rpms, rush up to 2500, down to a 1000; plus my "od/overdrive" light was messed up); came to almost $700.00-cheap part, lot of labor!

At 4200 rpm you are putting a lot of stress on your engine and it reacting to it. In my driving I try not to get over 3000 rmp at any time. I have a very fast car and I have noticed that my engine does strange things if I push it too quickly.

i too drive a 2001 focus, although mine is not automatic. to me, anything over 4000rpm seems unneccesary. maybe the noise is just the cars way of saying your going fast

No, but if you don't want to spend $100 in the diagnostic then just take it to autozone and they do the check up for free and tell you what it might be.

just look at what you are driving!!!
it has a washing machine engine!!!
it will never run like a V-8
you probabally bought it to save gas.
now that you've had it awile you can see why it gets good gas mileage.
