The "white" is simply a reflection of light of all portions of the spectrum of the rainbow...leaving only plain "white" as the apparent color. Melting of snow transforms it to its liquid state, and we all know water is "clear" (not "blue" -- for large bodies of water are simply reflecting the blue from the appearance of a (clear) sky!).

The white is just the reflection of light back up from the crystalline structure of the snowflakes. When the structure melts, there goes the reflection.

It just wasn't there in first place. The snow crystals reflect the light in such a way that it seems white when it reaches our eyes.
That was "scientific" explanation.

White is the color of all the colors of the spectrum. Snow is just crystallized H2O. the color is sustained only by the temperature.
