Because we live in a republic, not a democracy. We elect the politicians whom we believe to be the best (of the candidates) at making the difficult decisions. The reason we do this is not really because we think that the politicians are smarter than we are, but because we want to pay politicians to work *full time* researching and carefully considering the ramifications of each decision. I don't know about you, but I don't have the time or the resources to do such in-depth research. This does not mean that the politicians always make the right decision, but we must hope that it is a well researched and carefully considered opinion, and we must vote for those whom we believe value this hard work and understand their duty to decide the issues objectively.

The government also has the responsibilty to protect the rights of minorities in this country, by precedent as much as anything else. Besides, we have a "representative" democracy. So, you need a majority of constituencies not americans to have the nation "agree" with you. Similar to the electorate (you know Al Gore vs. W.). That's just how it is regardless of wether you agree or not.

The only way to change the present situation is to contact your local member of congress. If more people did that then we wouldn't be in the mess we're in right now. You have to get involved!!!!
