Probably is broken drive requiring replacement...
CD drives are easy to replace and inexpensive...
Usually under $29 or so in a desktop...

If you have USB, you can (for a little more $$$) replace with an external USB CD drive if you are squeamish about "cracking the case."

time to trash that computer and get a new one. theres nothing much you can do if your windows 98 isn't working anymore. that just means that it is old and it is time for an upgrade. my windows 98 used to do the same thing. like if i put an internet disk or cd in, it would just spit it right back out or it just wouldn't do anything. and it couldn't even connect to the internet anymore. so i had to get an all new computer with WindowsXP.

If you are using the same computer from 98 then the drive probably died. You can shop around and find a great up-to date computer with all shiny new parts for 200 bucks so go get yourself a present.

Suggested for the CD-ROM:

SpyBot SEarch and Destroy (not Ad-Aware, and not both)
Aida32 (freeware also)
http://www.grisoft.com AVG ANTIVIRUS (FREEWARE)

Symantec's ONLINE virus scan

Make sure your PC is clean and no virus is on board prior to doing a reformat or anything drastic.

Also go to to system restore and restore the PC to a date that the CD worked well and use that point prior to doing the scans.

Good luck!
