A lot of the answers I have read made very good points, but they are not correct. The actual answer is Gone with the Wind. The movie made a total of $198 million back when tickets cost a quarter. That comes to a grand total of 792,000,000 tickets. Today, tickets cost around $12. That is quite an increase and the other answers don't account for that. Now lets take that $600,000,000 that Titanic made in it's U.S. domestic gross and divide it by the average ticket price in 1997 obtained from boxofficemojo.com at $4.59. You end up with 130,000,000 tickets. So don't walk up to me and tell me that Titanic can out do one of the most classic films of all time.

They was saying on the news this morning that the new Pirates of the Carribean Movie is the biggest seller so far to date. But as far as actual number of tickets sold to the public I dont really know. But I am assuming that is the way they would consider record breaking.

Id think it was star wars. Ive been told that Gone with the wind has sold 30 million tickets (actual tickets not dollars) so that might be it.
People don't read the question. I'd bet that some Indian films have sold more tickets but I cant find figures on that.

This website has a few different records, but none going by ticket sales. It does, however, have a top 20 list of movies released in the United States and has the price of tickets adjusted for inflation.
Star Wars tops it.

I'm not sure how it measures against some of the more recent movies, but I know that Gone with the Wind used to hold the record for actual ticket sales.
