There is a man on third base. The batter hits the ball foul right by the third baseline, the runner is 20 feet in front of the bag and in foul territory, and the ball is still moving pretty fast and he picks up the ball, the ball was two feet from the line. The umpires talked it over and called the batter out, not the runner. Is this the corrext call? Should have they called anyone out? The home plate umpire said that the ball had a chance of going fair.

If in the umpires judgement the ball had a chance to go fair, then yes the runner is out for interference. This rule is in place to keep the runner from INTENTIONALLY interfering with a batted ball he feels he might be put out on. Why didn't he just let it go?

I am an umpire. The umpires blew the call. In this situation, if the umpires decided the ball had a chance of going fair, the runner would be out, the ball would be dead, and the batter would be awarded first base.

If you were managing the offensive team in this scenario, you need to focus on teaching your players to never touch the ball, regardless if they think it is dead. As a baserunner, you do not want to be anywhere near the ball you want to keep it away from you. They shouldn't feel like they need to shag balls to help the umps of defense. Umpires are always right, regardless of what the rule-book says. There is no NFLish instant replay rule in MLB, but if as the manager you want to argue the call to make sure you know you're pissed about it being wrong or at least questionable, go kick dirt on his shoes or plate and exchange some hot breath with him. If its the minors and you were the batter, just throw your bat at him to get your point across...I've seen thats how its done down there these days.

I don't think so:

Rule 7.09

it is interference by a batter or a runner when --

(b) He intentionally deflects the course of a foul ball in any manner;

PENALTY FOR INTERFERENCE: The runner is out and the ball is dead.

my memory of the rules aren't what they used to be, but if the ball had not yet reached/passed 3rd base, and the runner picked up the ball, not only should he be called out, but unfortunately, the batter can be called out, as well, even though he had nothing to do with it.
