I'm a single parent with no one but me to tell my child whats right or wrong , and the nail biting was going on back when her mother was around...

I really don't know what cause's it but I would never put my child's finger's in something to stop her to me that's wrong!

As some people would suggest [ maybe ].

What I do is when I catch her is tell that its nasty / germs and so on.

So soon enough she will stop I really do believe this , now it has slowed down so at least we are headed into the right direction.

This is what I suggest is time.

The loving heart of our children never forget the meanness I know I remember, Them abusive things dad did to me. So any other child would remember also.
Time and talking is the answer!

Start giving her manicures. My sister was a horrible nail biter and she ended up getting a job at a beauty salon when she was 17. She asked one of the nail techs how she could stop biting her nails b/c they were embarrassing to her. The tech told her to start taking care of them. She said that in her professional experience, once a girl/guy starts taking great care in their nails, they tend to stop biting them b/c they want to keep them nice all the time. Try making a "manicure date" w/ her and hopefully that'll not only help her nail biting, but give you and her some ample bonding time!

Try and tell her that its not a good habit.
The best way to convince a child into not doing something which has formed a part of their habit is to reward them.
So,incentives like chocolates, candies, etc. for not biting the nail for a day or so should do.

Put bits of onions into a clean nail polish and let it sit. The flavor of the onion will soak into the polish, and then paint it on her nails. When she bites down on it, she'll get that nasty taste and hopefully kick her habit.

Hot sauce. My grandmother used to put hot sauce on my fingers and within two bites of my fingers because I forgot, I never bite my nails again.

Dip her fingers in Castrol oil, it really works, even after you dry her hands off , that nasty taste has to wear off. What is funny is the look they get on their face when they go in for the snack, keep a camara close by, the faces are hillarious

Put some Tobassco Sauce on her fingers....if she's like most kids...she wont even want to bring her hands close to her face....But just watch her...cause you dont want her to put that in her eyes. It helped when I was little. My mom did it to me.....i stopped. Couldnt stand the taste or strong smell when it got close to me. of course....i mention the eyes cause I got it in my eyes when I was little....dingy me rubbed my eye with that on my fingers...burned a little...put some visine...all better. haha. Just becareful.
