Let's say I want to view the files within a certain website. I don't want to open them, just see what's there. If I go to www.example.com, I will be taken to the index page automatically. If there's no index, I'll just see all the files in the directory. How do I see all the files in the directory if there is an index page?

You can't. Thats the beauty of having index.html as our main page...its a security feature. People that do not have that page, the browser gets confused so it displays the list of files instead since it cant find the main page. There is no way of viewing the directory structure of the website if they have an index.html or main.html file existing in their main directory.

The ONLY way is to ask the website manager how you can FTP into their server and you can view their list. You cant just do it on your own without their knowledge...that would be illegal.

Use a tool called IntelliTamper, which can list available files on some web sites. Visit: intellitamper.com

Not always possible; this depends on the website's directory security. There's no good way to "see" it. You can try FTP anonymous access though (type in ftp://site.com instead of http://).

also, you should know that web server cna disable directory browsing - so if there was no index.html page you'd just get an error.
