I totally agree with you. I would have loved to see Argentina, Brazil, England or Spain make it further. I wasn't too impressed with with all the diving and bad behaviour from some of the players. I think that's what happens when you get teams of lesser quality fighting it out.
To rliedtky - I understand it's more exciting when you see people falling down and tackling but it just isn't fair. I don't think FIFA should allow such behaviour in order to make this sport more appealing to Americans. This sport is meant for the world to enjoy, not just Americans.

Hell, I don't know what you guys are complaining about. I felt this was a wonderful world cup. Really well organized and most of the teams made it. The semi finals?
Portugual...brilliant team, filled with super stars coached by a world cup winning coach.
Germany...Home team. played well.
Italy...Hell they were good enough to win. They might have seemed a tad bit defensive, but that is the way the play. catenaccio it's called...a rock of a defense.
And France...They were not supposed to get knocked out. look at their team....filled with veteran superstars. With great experience and great play all around. and brilliant defense spearheaded by thuram...midfield crowded with immense skill in zidance vieira makelele and ribery, and henry up front. They could never be counted out.
Apart from that...the teams you mentioned.
England...pathetic coach with pathetic tactics. but in any case they were knocked out by portugal. not some lowly team.
Argentina played brilliant football, but were unlucky to come up against a team supported by 90% of the fans in the stadium. the home team.
Brazil...again the coach was messed up, but more importantly they played a france team brimming with skill motivation hunger, and of course spear headed by zidane.
Overall this was a wonderful world cup. All the teams expected to play decently, except maybe the czech republic, made it past the group stage. Ukraine made it so far because france finished second in their group after a rather uninsipired opening to their campaign.
Compare this to the last world cup. semi finalists? Turkey, South Korea, and an under performing Germany. Argentina, France, and Portugal didn't even make it past the group stage. and netherlands? they didn't even qualify for a chance to be in the world cup. now that was a dismal world cup.
This one was brilliantly organized, brilliantly fought out. we saw some great action, and finally after all these years the Italians played the way the Italians do and won it.

Remember Spain 1982, Italy was a big underdog (couldn't win a single group game) until Paulo Rossi started to shine (scored 3 goals against Brazil). The same thing happened to France after Zidane decided to step up his playing...France ended up by eliminating Spain, Brazil (the best game of the tournament) and Portugal. They didn't steal their final seat...
I agree, Korean/Japan 2002 had more goals and much more spectacular teams, remember Senegal, Korea, Turkey, Sweden, etc...

The problem I had wasn't who made it to the finals, but how they made it to the finals. The officials were horrible, and FIFA made them that way. FIFA wanted to crack down on the rules, but that's not good for the sport. You have to let the players play, especially if you're looking to gain American interest. In America, we like to see people fall down and get scraped up. But almost every time someone fell, there was a card given. That's not good for the sport. I remember growing up watching the World Cup and loving it that players would slide tackle other players, kick the ball then take out the guy's feet. They aren't allowed to play anymore, and that's a shame.

It would have been much more enjoyable if teams like Brazil, England and Argentina would have played more offensively in decisive matches. The Netherlands didn't have much, really.

The worst one for sure!
1-because Italy wins and is not supposed to participate after the scandals in Italy...and was given free passes to the next game a few times..
2- referees incredibly inconsistant...
3- we are in the middle of a new scandal.

You can't predict the win by the rankings... That just doesn't work, it's all in how the teams play while on the field. Italy deserved the win, and France deserved to be there, as they worked hard.
