Well, it depends on the family and also the chosen passion. If the passion of your life is something that goes against moral and ethical values then the family has every right to not support the passion. But on the other hand if its a passion that does no harm to others then the family should (but they are under no obligation) to support your passion.
Honestly if you have a passion and you want to pursue that career path then go ahead and choose it (if you are over 21) with out the blessing of your family. Since you are an adult move out on your own and experience life and so to say spread your wings to fly out from the nest. Just remember if you are in the home of your parents and they still support you then they do have an obligation to speak their minds. Since you may not be able to support yourself.

My extendand family has never really cared what I do, I could fall off the face of the earth and they would not even miss me. My mom and brother care somewhat. I have excepted this fact and moved on. I try and have some contact with them, but it seems to be a one way street. But that is ok, I am happy with my life and feel I am on the right path.
I think it is important but I can't make them. All I can do is support my kids and break the chain.

My family doesn't understand or care what I do. They haven't been supportive but it doesn't matter. My choices are my own and I have learned far more than I ever expected to in life. I am happy that I found what I like to do and get paid enough to live well. I believe its most important to follow your dreams, with or without acceptance from everyone.

i have a passion for art - i help artists and promote them - what i receive in return is a painting -
my family is totally involved with my passion even if it means me going abroad to curate a show and they have to fend for themselves
if i didn't have this support i would probably be miserable cuz I wouldn't want to hurt the family but i don't want to crush my own outlet
I'm very lucky that my family lives art too so I guess we all benefit
also I'm not to nice to be around when I feel suffocated

Yes, my family does support what I do and I do think that their support plays an important part of what you do.

My parents still hate that I quit college, but they always support my decisions either way. Now I have a great job, and I know that without their support, I might not be where I am now.
