You should brush at least twice a day in a circular motion for at least 2 mins, tilt you brush at an angle towards the gums. That's 30 seconds in each quad of your mouth. You have 4 quads, 2 on the top, 2 on the bottom. You should also floss at least once a day and have your teeth professionally cleaned at a dental office at least twice a year. Some people think that side to side is okay, but in the long run this could cause an abrasion on the tooth surface, which in the long run could cause some sensitivity, and you may have to get a filling where there was never any decay, so do it right the first time to eliminate any unnecessary restorations in the future.

Floss between each tooth, then brush up and down, side to side and circles. A toothbrush with soft bristles is better for the gums, etc.

just be sure to focus brushing on the gum line, and angle the brush so it goes as far into the gums as possible. And brush your tongue! And floss! And use flouride!

Get one of those electrical tooth brushes, it helps vibrate all that plaque and food out.
