I'm moving down the street, and I need to get my internet up running at the new place as fast a possible (because of my career). Has anyone had experience with moving and switching DSL and phone service?

How long does it take to activate at the new place?

I'd call Verizon and ask them, but their customer support is so horrendous, that I'd rather not.

I had to do that many times.

I suggest you do it early. When you get your own phone service, they have to HOOK it up and it can take a few days, sometimes a week for them to connect your line. I had to have someone physically come in to install my DSL and it took a week for them to come out and hook it up.

It really depends on your service and how the previous owner of handled the lines. If the previous owner disconnected the landline, then it will take you a while to get it connected it again. Someone may or may not have to come out there to install the lines. Same with DSL, if the previous owners never had DSL, then someone has to physically come in to hook it up.

It doesnt take long for them to connect it. Its the time frame they give you for someone to come out there and connect it for you. If you already have the modem, and the previous owner had a DSL line before, then you can do it on the same day.

I worked for Verizon Technical Support for a year, so believe me, I know how crappy our support is. Are you using the consumer DSL package or the Business DSL package? With consumer, your looking at a minimum of a week to a maximum of 2 weeks. Sometimes they will even jerk with you and find out you don't even qualify at your new address, even though its down the street. I would recommend calling the Billing Department (866-765-1660 option 2, option 2, option 1), and ask for a suprivisor. Normally they can push and order through for you if you convince them to do so.

I would highly reccomend getting the Business package if you don't have it already. If you have problems with your DSL they have a line tech out to your house within 4 hours. Versus Consumer where I've seen problems go weeks on end without being resolved.

Hope this helps.

If it is truly "down the street" you will probably keep the same phone number and all things being equal it should "just work" with the same account.

Problems might only arise if moving to a different area, such that your phone number might change. Since you imply that you will be close, I assume you will be keeping your same phone number and all services should be activated at the new location with no changes! The only potential problem here would be if you are currently at the extreme fringe edge of a service area, and the move puts you beyond the distance limit of where they can service.

Let the phone company know as soon as possible so that any changes they need to make can be scheduled as soon as possible, and so they can verify you are not moving beyond their service range!

Good luck with this one. I had a horrible problem getting a new account set up almost a year ago. It was so bad I went with a competitor.
