Well, in older days you could submit your site over and over until it got listed. These day people pay for top spots... BUT... if you get a lot of traffic, and people do searches that lead to your site you will get listed. Make sure you have a zillion relevant keywords in your meta tag and the search bots pick them up.
The only one it took a long time for me to get on was yahoo. Now I can do a search for my user name only a get a load of returns no matter which search I use (mszippy).
