Is Capitol Hill generally safe? My daughter (fourteen) wants to go shopping with her two friends, one male(fifteen) and one female(fifteen) in Capitol Hill, Seattle, Washington. I am not sure if it is safe or not... and need second.. third.. fourth.. opinions.

I would assume she is going to be shopping on Broadway since it is the only real shopping area up here. I think it is perfectly safe in the daytime, but to warn you, there are some aggressive panhandlers looking for drug money. As long as she has some street smarts and she won't be easily intimidated or scared by drunks/people on drugs asking her for money, then let her go. I think it's a good idea that she will be with a boy and another girl.

Yes, Seattle's a pretty safe city and that includes Capitol Hill. I assume you're talking about daytime since it's shopping. You don't really have anything more to worry about than you would if you were sending her to the mall.

In the daytime, probably no problem. But there have been some recent violent disturbances on Capitol Hill in the evening, youngsters shooting each other, etc... The area is big on counter-culture atmosphere, which frequently involves drugs,...you know that kind of scene. Your kids need to be saavy about urban environments, and they'd probably be ok. But if they are very naive, they would likely be vulnerable to predation.

As a mother, and a previous teenage Seattle resident, I would say in a small group she should be okay. That is an area known for it's flamboyance and oddities - college crowd along with cross dressers, ravers, panhandlers, homeless kids, etc. All of that makes it a fun and interesting place to be. Just do the usual safety stranger talk, etc. and trust your instincts on how responsible your daughter is. I wouldn't have her go alone.

As long as its in the day time she would be fine. Just make sure she doesnt stay out to long. As long as she stays in Seattle shes fine, who different story if it was Tacoma though.
