there are squirrels where i live that i watch bury acorns and i think it's neat they do that with the expectation of finding it later. if you have something as idiotic to say as nikoco did, please don't bother.

They probably leave their scent, as many other animals do, combined with a good topographic memory.

They don't expect to find them later! They are just practicing good planting guidelines (planting trees for their little grand babies.



Actually Dr Quest hinted at the right idea. It has to do with magnetic fields, Like with Homing pidgeons. They feel the earth's magnetic fields. It is also how pets can find their way home from hundreds of miles away

They draw little squirrel maps with Xs for the spots where the nuts are buried. Some squirrels have tiny little GPS systems for the times they forget where the maps are.

They don't. That's why they run around digging all summer. They hide them and then find them based on smell. Only they can't smell well enough to find the exact spot, so they dig all around until they hit the jack pot.

I am sure trees are to them like buildings are to us. We can discern which is which and where we are. They remember, use landmarks, use special areas.
