The first thing I would do is run a virus check, and disc utilities you have to check the disc. Also check for spyware and malware. If he downloads music, he might have a serious bug. If all things are normal open up RECYCLE BIN and right click on the contents you want recovered and choose RESTORE off of the drop down menu. If that doesn't work , try downloading a UN-INSTALL UTILITY FROM cnet.com or download.com or sysinternals.com . Install it and follow the directions.

I'm assuming the two of you have separate log in names and you have the administrator account. Go to the Control Panel under User Accounts. Check to see that he has permission to save settings (this includes Desktop Icons). I don't have Windows XP where I am now (if you are using that) and I don't remember exactly where the info is located.
I doubt this is a virus because no one else is having this problem. If you have any questions or want more info, please feel free to email me at darkarcherminiatures@yahoo.com
Hopefully this will fix your problem.

He probably deleted it himself on accident. Just go to the "Recycling Bin" and Restore whatever he accidentally deleted.

Did he change his windows user-name? I had big/bizarre problems when I did that ... Off-hand, I'd say maybe make him another windows user-account and see if that fixes the problem...
