Behind the passener tire u-joint (towards the engine side of ball joints) there is some sort of hard platic ring (not exactly sure what it is) that the axle shaft seems to pass through. I was under the vehicle and noticed that this "hard plastic ring" is sliding back and forth about an inch along the axle, but to me it looks like it should be seat against axle housing. Is there a retaining clip missing or something? Is this going to pose a problem for me if I continue to drive it this way? I just had the wheel u-joints replaced a couple of months ago, did the mechanic make a mistake? Wish I could describe the problem better but I am not a mechanic by any means. Any info you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

yes you do have a problem with you front axle. That plastic ring is kind of a safety clip. and yes there is a clip to hold it up against the u-joint if i was u I'd go to the nearest mechanic and get it fixed before more problems appear.

undesirable bearings have ruined the wheel hub assembly. First you ought to determine the right front axle, because of the fact those XJs used many. Then determine you employ a shop with a good furnish and honest substitute coverage. I had my mechanic do mine on my 2000 XJ and it took 4 returns formerly we've been given the splendid assemblies. You been slamming that front end? that's what ruined mine.

I would go and ask the mechanic. If it is something he didn't do, he should take care of it. It sounds like it is a cover to keep dirt out. I would keep it clean until you can have it looked at. o[|||||]o
