With my current hamster, I fill his dish up everytime it gets low. He does not over eat or stash too much of his food (I've had others that will stash the entire dish!) so I just make sure he has food and fresh water available all the time.
A hamster only requires about a tablespoon of food a day plus other treats of veggies, fruits, cereals, etc. However to be on the safe side I always gave extra to my hamsters. They won't eat themselves to death, so there is no harm in filling up the dish. It's better they have extra food then be low on it.

Feed your hamster around the same time everyday. Hamsters will not overeat, but they can be fussy about what they eat.
Buy a bag of food labeled as a complete diet for hamsters and then buy several different kinds of treats made for hamsters. General rule of thumb: a little bit of everything.
Start with filling half his bowl with the complete diet (make sure there are plenty of sunflower seeds, corn and nuts, as these are among the basic essentials) and then sprinkle in one of each different kind of treat, unless the packaging says it is okay to give him more. This way, your little guy has the variety he craves.
He'll dig around and find what he likes and either eat it right there or store it in his pouches and bring it back to his nest. The following day, you should notice the bowl has some food missing-fill it to the top again with a mix of his complete diet and a variety of treats. (Hamsters usually eat between one and two tablespoons of food everyday) Keep re-filling it everyday, and after a while, you will probably notice theres quite a bit of food he hasn't eaten-this tends to be stuff he doesn't like very much-or there is too much of one thing. Empty the bowl, and fill it to the top again-but try not to use as much of the stuff that he wasn't eating.
Hamsters instinctively know what things to eat if they are low on certain vitamins or minerals, so one day he might eat a lot of corn and the next day, less corn and more nuts, and so forth. So even though he isn't eating something one day, doesn't mean you should never feed it to him again. Also, you can add small amounts of fresh, raw veggies (like a small piece of lettuce, a slice of carrot) fresh fruits (like half a raspberry, a sliver of banana) or even a tiny bit of cheese or pea-sized amount of peanut butter atop a dime sized piece of bread. (Don't give your hamster anything sweet or processed.) These are extra special treats, however, and too much can cause health problems-but a little bit once every week or so will be quite an exciting find for your hamster. In addition, make sure to remove any fresh fruits or veggies that haven't been eaten after a few hours or they will get moldy.
Best of luck to you and long live your hamster!

well it depends on how big your food bowl is. Don't give it too much, i'd say around 1-2 or 2-3 cm. from the bottom of the bowl.
And you have to feed it DAILY or else it will die.
good luck with the hamster!

that's organic hamster habit. My hamster used to sit contained in the nutrients bowl and crazyily kick each and each and every of the nutrients out or till he chanced on something he loved. they frequently bury nutrients in countless spots so dont hardship shes eating and shes a healthful little hamster.
