Laws are made to cover the lowest common dominator, is that right? Why should I for example have to suffer because one idiot did a bad thing so now nobody gets to do it, the subject is irrelevant.

thanks for all the answers, hoever I need to make my point a little clearer, my question has more to do with why do laws have to apply to all people i.e. fireworks bans. Indeed some people will blow thier fingers off, but most won;t, yet there are laws against fireworks here. The fireworks ban really isn't the point. This question is more about these types of laws having to cover everyone and not taking into consideration that not everyone in this world is a moron.

Yes. Way too many. Laws and regulations piled up miles high. All these laws and rules turn free people into slaves of the state. The more laws = to the less freedom.

Finding the correct balance of laws can be very difficult. What you consider to be too many may not be enough for another. This is an issue of political philosophy. Elected officials make decisions based on these principles. You sound more like a libertarian. That OK. But so is being a communist. The trick is to finding a perfect middle ground that doesn't infringe on too many people. Also - It depends on where you live. Your local gov't may have more laws that another area. There are some locations in the US that don't have speed limits! But in some places in NYC the speed limit is 5mph! It's all perspective.

Yes. But in the absence of common sense and civility, and in the presence of human foibles, it is, unfortunately, all we have right now. Perhaps after several thousand more years of social evolution, we won't need so many laws. Its like the difference between grade school, and college.

The amount of laws are OK, it is the people who refuse to follow them that is the problem. How hard is it to not steal, kill, rape, etc. I have no problem following laws, I don't see how any half-decent human being could have a problem with this.

We need heavier sentences.

Laws aren't the problem. The innate corruption of the individual is what's at issue. There use to be law on Pirate vessels too, you know.
