"Manipulate" or "control" really aren't the right words for it. More like, "used" or "abused".

Essentially, he made promises to the religious base on matters of sociological importance to them, such as marriage and abortion and the like, that he never planned on delivering on.

And I'd bet you have Karl Rove to thank for that strategy more than George Bush.

Agreeing with the respondent who stated that Karl Rove duped the far-right, activist Fundies.
Little Prince George's brainpower isn't quite up to a task as large as that was. But again, the Fundies have never been known for logical and rational decision-making.
After saying that, I suppose the Baby Bush *could* have pulled it off, afterall!

Hmpf! Go figure.

EDIT: There was an implication the reason for the Little Prince's election was due to his being "just better", etc., and he was voted in by the people (as I infer within the context of the answer). This is utter nonsense.
The Baby Bush *DID NOT* win the popular vote. Only through the Electoral College did he get away with his (et al) thinly veiled ruse of corruption and deceit.
Almost.

Stories are breaking virtually every week these days exposing those for what they've done, and more and more of Little Prince George's entourage ('Cabinet' and 'White House Staffers' seem oddly out of place when used together with the Baby Bush) are being indicted; however, "entourage" is polysyllabic and also seems oddly out of place. Oh well...

Need I say more?
Nah.

I got this one...the Christian nuts had their own party and candidate in the 2000 election, the hijacked "Reform Party" led by Pat Buchanan after he left the Republicans to go to the Reform party primaries. He was an old buddy of Nixon's and a hardcore neo-con, but he decided to run on the Christian right/KKK platform. This delighted the racist Christian hate groups and he had a very strong backing for a 3rd party candidate in the polls. Come 3 months before election, he picked his running mate...Ezola B. Fester, a black woman.

Result, all those reichwingers pumped up to vote got pissed, jumped ship and went to the next nearest thing, Bush's republicans. That's a good 4% more popular vote for him in the 2000 election. This was just one trick in the RNC strategy to make sure the neo-cons made it to the White House in 2000.

Next result, to keep these idiots happy, Rove had pundits throw a little racist or pro-christian bone to the reichwingers once in a while on talk radio and Fox commentary. As a result, some normal conservatives starting picking up on this message, so now we have a mainstream Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, always given plenty of air time...with a normally moderate Republican movement moving slowly but surely to the ultra-right fascist side of the house.

No thanks! I'm not an Evangelical Christian, neither is my husband, his family, my father, my brothers but we all voted for him. It's not manipulation and control Bush was just better, in every way, than Kerry and Gore. Why can't you people just accept the truth, deal with it, and try to find somebody decent that people would vote for like Joe Lieberman, for instance? Or is he not full of hate and crazy enough for you?

I am not sure about who is controlling who on this one. A very vocal minority group has enough to force a marginal candidate to pass legislation on their behalf. even if they can only deliver a few percent of the vote that makes them very powerful in a close race, especially with the current round of state and senate elections coming up, it is not how many votes you win by but only that you win that counts.
